Howick Intermediate Student Wins Art Prize with Ocean-Inspired Work

Ruby Tierney, a student at Howick Intermediate School, has been awarded the top prize at the Howick Art Group’s Spring Festival Art Exhibition for her captivating artwork inspired by the ocean. The exhibition took place at the Howick Bowling Club in early August 2023, showcasing the creative talents of local students.

Tierney’s piece, which was deemed the best in the student category, reflects her deep connection to the ocean. She described it as a constant source of inspiration, noting, “I’ve always been drawn to the ocean because it feels both calming and powerful at the same time.” Her artwork aims to capture the ocean’s varying moods, illustrating its tranquil beauty alongside its wild unpredictability.

Artistic Expression and Environmental Awareness

The theme for this year’s exhibition, titled In Our Own Backyard, encouraged students from Howick, Bucklands Beach, and Somerville Intermediate Schools to express their creativity while also raising awareness about environmental issues. Tierney shared her intent to convey both the beauty and the need for conservation of oceanic environments through her vibrant colors, textures, and dynamic wave movements.

“I think of the ocean as a symbol of freedom, but also something we need to take care of,” she explained. Her art teacher, Amanda Wolken, has supported her artistic journey, highlighting the importance of such creative outlets for students.

Julie Mitchell from the Howick Art Group expressed her delight at the enthusiastic participation from schools in the Art Extension programme. “The positive response we received from students and the community has been heartening,” she remarked. The exhibition not only celebrated the talents of young artists but also marked the 60th anniversary of the Howick Art Group, which has been fostering local art since its inception in February 1965.

Judging and Recognition

The student artworks were evaluated by a panel of judges including Matt Dowman, a lecturer at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design; Tony Morgan, a former art teacher at Macleans College; and Nicki Richards, owner and curator of Quay Gallery in Whitford. Their expertise helped ensure that the artworks received fair and thoughtful consideration.

In addition to Tierney’s first-place recognition, several other students were acknowledged for their contributions. Those awarded distinction included Sasha Chugunova, Mimi Al-Malaika, Ting Ting U, and Connie Lin, while merit awards went to Michael Song, Zoe Jin, Xiaoxiao Y, Jade G, and Esther Tan.

The exhibition attracted considerable interest, with 212 works submitted by adult artists also vying for recognition. The vibrant display of creativity and the environmental theme resonated well with the audience, making the event a memorable celebration of local artistry.
