Northland Man Appeals for Continued Name Suppression in Abuse Case

A man from Northland, associated with the religious sect known as the Two by Twos, is appealing to the High Court to maintain name suppression amid serious charges of child sexual abuse. The appeal follows a decision by the Whangārei District Court to deny the continuation of name suppression after a year of anonymity.
The man first appeared in court in November 2024, facing multiple charges linked to the sexual abuse of boys that allegedly occurred during the 1980s. His name has been kept confidential since the initial proceedings began, a measure that he now seeks to uphold.
In addition to his appeal for name suppression, the district court declined his request to sever the charges, which would have allowed for two separate trials. The refusal to separate the charges has implications for the management of the case and the legal strategy employed by the man’s defense team.
The High Court’s decision on this appeal will determine whether the man’s identity remains protected as the legal process unfolds. The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding child protection and accountability within religious organizations, including the Two by Twos.
As the appeal is processed, the court’s eventual ruling will be pivotal not only for the accused but also for the victims and the broader community, who are closely monitoring the developments in this sensitive case.
