Sabalenka Triumphs at US Open, Securing Back-to-Back Titles

Aryna Sabalenka has defended her title at the US Open, securing her fourth Grand Slam victory by defeating Amanda Anisimova in a thrilling final held at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on September 10, 2023. This win makes Sabalenka the first woman since Serena Williams to achieve back-to-back US Open championships, having last won the tournament in 2022.
The final showcased the power and precision of both competitors, but the match ultimately hinged on unforced errors. Sabalenka committed only 15 such errors compared to Anisimova’s 29, demonstrating her ability to maintain composure under pressure. After clinching victory with an unreturnable serve, Sabalenka fell to her knees in celebration, expressing gratitude to her supporters. “I want to thank everyone who came here, who flew in to be there in my box,” said Sabalenka, joyfully embracing her coaching team.
In contrast, Anisimova, who was playing in her second major final, struggled to maintain momentum despite the support of a home crowd. The 24-year-old American reflected on her feelings after the match, stating, “It’s been a great summer, losing in two finals in a row is great but it’s also super hard.” Anisimova’s previous heartbreak came from a 6-0, 6-0 defeat in the Wimbledon final two months earlier.
Weather Disrupts but Not Deters
A sudden downpour prior to the match forced tournament organizers to deploy the retractable roof at Ashe, but this did not dampen the spirits of the gathered fans, which included numerous celebrities. As the rain subsided and the players warmed up, Sabalenka displayed her trademark tenacity. The 27-year-old Belarusian faced three break points in a tense opening game but saved them, gaining an early edge in the match.
Anisimova found her rhythm after breaking back in the third game, showcasing her powerful forehand. However, Sabalenka quickly regained control, breaking Anisimova in the sixth game and closing out the first set with a commanding serve. The second set saw Anisimova momentarily rally, leveling the score before Sabalenka’s relentless power overwhelmed her, culminating in a decisive tiebreak win.
Significance of the Victory
With this victory, Sabalenka not only captured her fourth Grand Slam title but also marked her 100th win at major tournaments. In a celebratory gesture, she playfully slapped her trainer’s head, a tradition following her victories. Following the match, she offered words of encouragement to Anisimova, saying, “I know it hurts but girl, when you win your first one – and you are going to win it – you will realise that all the tough lessons are worth it.”
Anisimova’s impressive run at the US Open will elevate her ranking to fourth in the world, a significant achievement considering her recent return to competitive tennis after an eight-month hiatus to focus on her mental health. “Aryna, you are so incredible,” she remarked, acknowledging Sabalenka’s accomplishments.
As the tennis calendar progresses, both players will look to build on their performances, with fans eagerly anticipating their future encounters on the court.
