The Stodart family has achieved notable recognition in sustainable farming by winning Silver Fern Farms’ prestigious 2024 Plate to Pasture supplier award. This accolade reflects their commitment to innovative practices and sustainable agriculture, which have significantly improved their farm’s performance over the past two years.

David and Jackie Stodart, who operate Crown Lea, have embraced new farming techniques and technologies under the guidance of their son, Shaun. Since his return to the family business, Shaun’s ideas have catalyzed a transformation in their farming methods. The company’s annual report highlighted their dedication to sustainable farming practices and adherence to the NZFAP Plus Gold standards. “Their focus on continuous improvement really stood out for our judges,” it stated.

David expressed pride in receiving the award, which he described as a “pretty proud moment.” He reflected on the journey, stating, “We thought we were just ordinary farmers getting on with our work.” The Stodarts initially believed their regional win was sufficient, but their commitment to innovation propelled them to a national achievement.

The family has adopted various approaches to enhance their farming operations, including leveraging technology and farm data. Shaun, who has a background as a stock agent for Silver Fern Farms, played a crucial role in modernizing their operation. Jackie noted his significant contributions, saying, “He could see the benefits, and he knew what was available.”

David initially hesitated to embrace the NZFAP Plus standards but changed his perspective after attending a conference on the subject. This shift in mindset has been pivotal in Crown Lea’s evolution.

Expanding the Family Legacy

The Stodarts acquired Crown Lea in 2012 and later expanded by adding the Mararoa and Titiroa blocks, bringing their total land area to 750 hectares. Nestled between the Takitimu Range and Lake Manapouri, the farm is home to a diverse array of livestock, including 2,800 ewes, 750 hoggets, 120 beef cattle, and 220 velveting stags.

Both David and Jackie have deep roots in the region, having grown up near the Takitimus. They married in 1989 and became involved in farming after David’s father passed away. Their journey has been supported by invaluable advice from the late Trevor Wilson, a Southland stock agent and trustee of David’s father’s estate. David remarked, “He played quite a big part in everywhere we’ve gone and everything we’ve done.”

Jackie emphasizes the importance of remaining open to new ideas in the farming sector. While adapting to new methods can be challenging, it often leads to rewarding outcomes. The Stodarts’ efforts in environmental stewardship, including wetland protection and native planting in collaboration with Environment Southland, exemplify their progressive approach.

Their commitment to sustainability and innovation is encapsulated in a motto displayed in their workshop: “To passionately develop and improve our land and livestock to secure our family’s future.” This philosophy not only drives their farming practices but also highlights their dedication to the land and future generations.
