Tech Leader Mel Migrino Champions Gender Inclusivity and Cybersecurity

A prominent figure in the fields of information technology and cybersecurity, Mel Migrino is leveraging her extensive experience and status to advocate for gender inclusivity and enhanced cybersecurity practices in the Philippines. In a recent interview, she detailed her mission to use her success to champion the causes of those who are less privileged and to promote a safer digital landscape for all.
During her career, Migrino has occupied senior executive positions, successfully transitioning from software development to information security. She credits a former mentor, whom she affectionately refers to as a “dragon lady,” for recognizing her potential and guiding her towards leadership roles. Migrino emphasizes that her drive for change stems from a deep sense of gratitude for her achievements, which fuels her desire to support both gender inclusion and the fight against digital exclusion.
Advocacy for Gender Inclusion
Migrino is at the helm of the Women and Security Alliance Philippines (WISAP), an organization dedicated to fostering female leadership in cybersecurity. She stated, “Our goal is to develop digital risk leaders,” underscoring that the mission of WISAP is not merely to elevate women but to promote equity across genders. Approximately 35 to 40 percent of the group comprises male executives who actively support diversity and inclusion initiatives.
The organization has made significant strides in a short time, building partnerships with various groups across the ASEAN region. According to Migrino, the community service efforts over the past three years have started to create a ripple effect, leading to increased awareness and support for gender inclusivity within the tech industry.
Cybersecurity Advocacy and Its Importance
In addition to her focus on gender issues, Migrino is passionate about enhancing cybersecurity awareness in the Philippines. With over a decade of experience in the cybersecurity sector, she has transitioned to a business leadership role in a technology company that actively combats online scams. She shared, “I want to see greater advocacy against scams and fraud, so that more Filipinos can be digitally enabled and confident in their online transactions.”
Migrino highlights the critical nature of these efforts, particularly for vulnerable communities. She explains, “Scams can be an entry point to more serious issues,” referencing the potential for human trafficking that may arise from cybercrime. Her advocacy seeks to educate and empower individuals, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds, to safeguard themselves against such threats.
The motivation for her advocacy is deeply personal, rooted in her Christian faith. Migrino reflects, “It’s not because I want to be known as the leader of a community. I want to serve my community.” Her commitment to these causes reflects both a professional and personal dedication to fostering a safer and more inclusive digital environment.
Migrino’s work exemplifies how one individual’s success can be harnessed for the greater good, driving meaningful change within both the tech industry and society at large. As she continues to champion these vital issues, her influence serves as an inspiring model for future leaders in technology and advocacy.
