Young Author Jasmine Donaldson Launches Debut Novel
Jasmine Donaldson, a 26-year-old author from Snells Beach, has marked a significant achievement with the release of her debut novel, The People I Know Now. This young adult book explores themes of self-discovery and community, resonating with those navigating the complexities of finding their purpose.
Donaldson, a former student of Mahurangi College, began crafting the novel at the age of 24 during a transitional period in her life. She reflected on her journey, stating, “It took time to find my close circle of friends and figure out what I wanted to pursue after leaving school. It can feel lonely if you don’t have the support you need during those moments.” With this narrative, she aims to connect with young adults who may share similar experiences of searching for belonging.
From Passion to Publication
Her passion for writing ignited early; Donaldson joined a writing club in primary school. She has since participated in various short story competitions, receiving recognition in the NZ Writers College Short Story Competition last year. This acknowledgment fueled her determination to complete her novel, which she describes as her first published work.
With the publication of The People I Know Now, Donaldson views this milestone as the start of her writing career. “I’m currently working through ideas for another novel. I really enjoy young adult books, so for now, I’m sticking with that path and seeing where the journey takes me,” she noted. Her aspirations extend beyond writing, as she aims to inspire young individuals to embrace their creativity.
A Multifaceted Journey
In addition to her writing pursuits, Donaldson has held diverse roles, including positions at Matakana Cinemas and as a pottery decorator. Currently, she works at the Mahurangi East Library, where she continues to engage with her community. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys reading, watching films, spending quality time with family and friends, and practicing aerial hoop acrobatics.

To celebrate the release of her debut novel, Mahurangi Matters is hosting a book giveaway. Participants can enter by emailing their contact details to [email protected] with “The People I Know” in the subject line by November 5.
With her debut novel now available, Jasmine Donaldson is poised to inspire a new generation of readers and writers through her storytelling journey.
