New Owners Revitalize Studio Matakana with Local Touch

The boutique gift store Studio Matakana has new ownership, with husband and wife duo Scott and Juliana Cowen taking the helm in mid-June 2023. Located in the picturesque village of Matakana, the Cowens aim to enhance the shopping experience in the area, encouraging residents to shop locally rather than venturing into the city.

Currently residing in Snells Beach with their four children, the Cowens have expressed their commitment to the community. “We love Matakana and its surroundings,” Juliana stated. Their vision is to provide a diverse selection of New Zealand-made and designed products, catering to both locals and tourists alike.

Focus on Local and Unique Products

With three decades of retail experience, Juliana plans to expand the store’s offerings significantly. “It’s important to us to support Kiwi companies, especially smaller businesses,” she emphasized. The new product range will include unique items such as McGlashen pottery, natural bath bombs, and a baby gift collection featuring locally made blankets.

Scott has implemented operational changes aimed at modernizing the shopping experience. Notably, Studio Matakana has launched its first e-commerce website. “The store has always been traditional, but now customers can browse online as well as in person,” he explained. This new feature allows customers the convenience of shopping from home while still appreciating the tactile elements of the products.

A Blend of Tradition and Modern Shopping

Even with the digital expansion, the Cowens remain focused on creating an engaging in-store experience. “We want to highlight the feel, the fragrance, the detail—elements that are best enjoyed in-store,” Scott added. Studio Matakana continues to feature popular designers like Karen Walker and local favorite Matakana Botanicals, alongside a selection of handcrafted glassware, jewellery, body products, and homewares.

To accommodate a variety of budgets, the store offers items ranging from affordable cards to premium greenstone carvings. “We want Studio Matakana to be the go-to for thoughtful gifts,” Juliana noted, whether for personal use, a friend, or as a souvenir to take overseas.
