Uganda Agrees to Temporarily Accept US Deportees Under Conditions

Uganda has reached a preliminary agreement to accept individuals deported from the United States who do not qualify for asylum. This arrangement emerges as part of the broader immigration policy under the administration of former President Donald Trump, which aims to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. The Ugandan government has stated that the acceptance of deportees will be contingent upon specific conditions.
According to Vincent Bagiire Waiswa, the permanent secretary in Uganda’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, the country will not accept individuals with criminal records or unaccompanied minors. Waiswa emphasized that the agreement is intended as a temporary measure while both parties work out the finer details regarding the implementation. “The two parties are working out the detailed modalities on how the agreement shall be implemented,” he noted in a statement released on Thursday.
This decision follows a report that the Ugandan government had previously denied, which claimed an agreement had been reached to accept deported individuals from the United States. Waiswa clarified that Uganda currently lacks the facilities to accommodate a large number of deportees, asserting the need for adequate resources to manage any influx.
Uganda, a key ally of the United States in East Africa, has a long history of hosting refugees. The country is currently home to nearly two million refugees and asylum-seekers, many of whom come from neighboring countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Sudan. The Ugandan government’s willingness to accept deportees from the U.S. under specific conditions highlights its ongoing commitment to refugee support while balancing its own capacity to manage such populations.
As details of the agreement are finalized, it remains to be seen how many individuals Uganda will ultimately accept and what the implications will be for those affected. The arrangement underscores the complex dynamics of international immigration policies and the challenges faced by countries involved in managing displaced populations.
