Smartphone Sales Projected to Rise Amid AI Mobile Boom

Global smartphone sales are anticipated to see a modest increase of 1% in 2025, reaching a total of 1.24 billion units, according to a recent report by the research firm IDC. This growth is occurring despite ongoing global economic challenges, primarily driven by unexpected demand in regions such as the United States, the Middle East, and Africa.
Apple leads the market, with projections indicating a 3.9% rise in iPhone sales this year compared to 2024. The tech giant’s strong performance is attributed to its loyal customer base and innovative offerings that continue to attract new users. As consumer preferences evolve, the report highlights the significant role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the smartphone segment.
AI Mobile Phones Set for Dominance
IDC forecasts that sales of AI-enabled mobile phones will account for 30% of total smartphone sales in 2025, translating to approximately 370 million units sold. Over the next four years, this figure is projected to surge, with AI mobiles expected to represent 70% of overall sales by 2029. This shift underscores a growing consumer inclination towards devices that offer enhanced functionality and intelligent features.
The report also notes the rising interest in foldable smartphones, predicting a year-over-year growth of 6% in both 2025 and 2026, followed by an 11% increase in 2027. Despite this growth, the demand for foldables is expected to remain relatively modest, constituting just 3% of total smartphone shipments by 2029.
Market Trends and Consumer Preferences
The anticipated rise in smartphone sales and the increasing popularity of AI-enabled devices reflect broader trends in consumer behavior. As users seek more advanced features, manufacturers are likely to focus on integrating AI capabilities into their devices. This trend may influence future product development and marketing strategies within the industry.
As the smartphone market continues to evolve, companies will need to adapt to changing consumer preferences. With AI technology becoming a central component in mobile devices, the landscape is set for significant transformation over the next few years. As these trends unfold, stakeholders in the technology sector will be closely monitoring developments to capitalize on emerging opportunities.
