Smartphone Sales Projected to Rise as AI Models Gain Traction
Global smartphone sales are anticipated to experience a modest increase of 1% in 2025, reaching approximately 1.24 billion units. This growth comes despite ongoing economic challenges worldwide, driven primarily by unexpected demand in key regions such as the United States, the Middle East, and Africa. A report from the research firm IDC indicates that the market is poised for a significant transformation, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) enabled mobile devices.
According to IDC, sales of AI-enabled smartphones are projected to account for 30% of total smartphone sales in 2025, with an estimated 370 million units expected to be sold this year alone. This figure is set to expand dramatically, as IDC forecasts that by 2029, AI mobiles will dominate the market, making up 70% of all smartphone sales.
Apple leads the smartphone market, with expectations to boost its iPhone sales by 3.9% this year compared to the previous year. The company’s strong performance underscores its position as a major player in the industry, capitalizing on the growing consumer interest in advanced mobile technology.
Growth in Foldable Phones
The IDC report also highlights the emerging category of foldable smartphones, predicting a growth rate of 6% year-over-year for both 2025 and 2026, followed by an increase of 11% in 2027. Despite this positive outlook, the overall demand for foldable devices is expected to remain limited. IDC projects that foldable smartphones will represent just 3% of total smartphone shipments by 2029.
As the smartphone market continues to evolve, the integration of AI technology is set to redefine user experiences and drive sales in the coming years. The adaptability of key players like Apple, along with the innovative potential of AI-enabled devices, positions the industry for a new phase of growth amid ongoing global economic uncertainties.
