Smartphone Sales Set to Rise as AI-Enabled Models Surge
Global smartphone sales are projected to increase by 1% in 2025, reaching an estimated total of 1.24 billion units, according to a recent report from research firm IDC. This growth comes despite ongoing global economic challenges and is largely attributed to unexpectedly high demand in regions such as the United States, the Middle East, and Africa.
A notable contributor to this upward trend is the surge in sales of AI-enabled smartphones. IDC forecasts that 370 million of these devices will be sold this year, making up 30% of total smartphone sales. The report anticipates that this proportion will rise dramatically to 70% by 2029, indicating a significant shift in consumer preferences towards advanced technology.
Apple Leads the Market
Among smartphone manufacturers, Apple is expected to perform particularly well. The company is projected to sell 3.9% more iPhones in 2025 compared to the previous year. This growth solidifies Apple’s position as a leader in the smartphone market, further enhanced by the increasing integration of artificial intelligence in its devices.
The report also highlights trends in the foldable smartphone segment, forecasting a 6% year-over-year growth in sales for both 2025 and 2026, with an even larger increase of 11% in 2027. Despite this positive outlook, IDC notes that foldables will still represent a small fraction of the overall smartphone shipments, accounting for only 3% of total sales by 2029.
The anticipated rise in AI-enabled smartphones reflects broader technological advancements and consumer demand for smarter, more efficient devices. As the smartphone market continues to evolve, companies will need to adapt to these changing preferences to remain competitive.
In summary, the smartphone industry is poised for a modest recovery in sales, driven by the rise of AI-enabled models and the continued success of established brands like Apple. As technology progresses, the shift towards smarter devices will likely shape the future landscape of mobile technology.
