Smartphone Sales Set to Rise as AI Mobile Phones Gain Traction
Global smartphone sales are projected to increase by 1% in 2025, reaching a total of 1.24 billion units, according to a new report from the research firm IDC. This modest growth comes amid global economic challenges, driven primarily by unexpectedly strong demand in regions including the United States, the Middle East, and Africa.
The report highlights that Apple is leading the market, expected to sell 3.9% more iPhones in 2025 compared to the previous year. This trend indicates a continued consumer preference for Apple products, contributing significantly to the overall growth in smartphone sales.
AI Mobile Phones to Dominate the Market
IDC forecasts that this year, 370 million AI-enabled mobile phones will be sold, making up 30% of total smartphone sales. Looking ahead, this share is anticipated to rise dramatically, reaching 70% by 2029. The integration of artificial intelligence in smartphones is expected to enhance user experiences, driving consumer interest and sales in this segment.
In addition to AI-enabled devices, the report also discusses the future of foldable smartphones. IDC anticipates a year-over-year growth of 6% for foldables in both 2025 and 2026, with a further increase of 11% in 2027 as the technology matures. Nevertheless, foldable phones are expected to represent only 3% of total smartphone shipments by 2029, indicating a niche market despite the projected growth.
As the smartphone market evolves, the rise of AI mobiles signifies a shift in consumer preferences and technological advancements. The increasing integration of AI features is likely to reshape the competitive landscape, offering new opportunities for manufacturers and enhanced functionalities for users.
Overall, the IDC report paints a cautiously optimistic picture for the smartphone industry, highlighting resilience amid economic uncertainty and a clear trajectory towards innovation and growth.
