71-Year-Old Val Muskett Triumphs in 48-Hour Ultramarathon

At the age of 71, ultramarathon runner Val Muskett demonstrated remarkable endurance by completing an impressive 236.21 km during the 48-hour ultramarathon event at Hagley Park in Christchurch last week. Despite facing challenging weather conditions, Muskett achieved all her goals, showcasing that age is no barrier to athletic ambition.
The ultramarathon featured a 2.8 km course where participants aimed to cover as much distance as possible within their chosen timeframes. Alongside the 48-hour event, there were also six-day, 72-hour, and 24-hour races. Muskett’s performance included completing 100 km in 13 hours 56 minutes, and 100 miles (approximately 160.9 km) in 25 hours 23 minutes.
Muskett approached the challenge with a mental strategy, breaking down the long-distance run into manageable stages. She explained, “I just batten the hatches down because the weather was atrocious. So it was about mind over matter, just staying out there.” Initially, her goal was to run continuously until reaching the 100-mile mark, with anything beyond that considered a bonus.
The adverse weather conditions took a toll on many participants, with reports of at least three cases of hypothermia. Muskett’s husband, John Muskett, assisted her throughout the event, walking alongside her to provide support. He praised the organization of the ultramarathon, stating, “This was without doubt the best organised event we’ve ever been to. Nobody complained, and I guarantee you, if they hadn’t have been running through such terrible weather, everything would have been fine.”
Despite her visual impairment, which prevents her from seeing clocks or using a watch, Muskett maintained a detailed diary of her running goals. She mentioned her focus was key to her success: “I tend not to talk to anybody when I’m running.”
In her home town of Hampden, Muskett enjoys regular runs along the beach. She noted that recovery from an ultramarathon typically takes about a week. As for her future plans, she expressed interest in returning to the Christchurch event next year, although John Muskett voiced concern over her potential aspiration to tackle the full six-day race.
Val Muskett’s remarkable achievements serve as an inspiring reminder of resilience and determination in the face of challenges, proving that passion for sport can thrive at any age.
