Black Ferns Announce Squad for Women’s Rugby World Cup Quarterfinal

The Black Ferns have named their squad for the crucial quarterfinal match against South Africa in the 2025 Rugby World Cup, set to take place at 12:00 AM on September 14 at Sandy Park in Exeter. This match is pivotal as it determines who advances in the tournament, and the team has made strategic selections to bolster their chances.
Returning to the lineup are loose forward Kaipo Olsen-Baker and centre Amy du Plessis, both of whom missed earlier matches due to injuries sustained in the opening round of pool play. Olsen-Baker’s experience will be essential as the team aims to secure a spot in the semifinals. Stacey Waaka will also take the field, marking her 30th test appearance.
In the starting XV, the front row features tighthead prop Veisinia Mahutariki-Fakalelu, alongside loosehead prop Chryss Viliko and hooker Georgia Ponsonby. The locks are comprised of Maiakawanakaulani Roos and Alana Bremner, while the loose forwards include Liana Mikaele-Tu’u, Jorja Miller, and Olsen-Baker.
The backline is led by halfback Maia Joseph, who partners with co-captain Ruahei Demant. The midfield is anchored by veteran players Theresa Setefano and Waaka. On the wings, Portia Woodman-Wickliffe joins Braxton Sorensen-McGee, who has been in remarkable form, having scored consecutive hat-tricks against Ireland and Japan. Sorensen-McGee currently leads the tournament with 38 points. The fullback position is filled by Renee Holmes, who also had a standout performance against Ireland.
The bench includes Atlanta Lolohea, Awhina Tangen-Wainohu, Kate Henwood, Laura Bayfield, co-captain Kennedy Tukuafu, Iritana Hohaia, du Plessis, and Ayesha Leti-I’iga.
Director of Performance Allan Bunting emphasized the significance of the upcoming match, saying, “This match against South Africa means a lot to us; it’s a final. We are also aware of what this game means to South Africa. We have selected our strongest available 23.” Bunting also expressed gratitude towards the supporters, highlighting their unwavering commitment, including that of their families, stating, “We feel and appreciate the continuous support for our wāhine.”
As the Black Ferns prepare for what promises to be an intense clash, the team aims to build on their experiences from prior matches, particularly the lessons learned in the test against Ireland. The anticipation for this quarterfinal is palpable, with fans eager to see if the Black Ferns can advance further in the tournament.
