South African Entrepreneur Opens Tasty Temptations in Kaiwaka
Entrepreneur Esmeralda Oppelt celebrated a significant milestone by opening her first store, Tasty Temptations, in the rural town of Kaiwaka, New Zealand, on November 29, 2023. The opening day was met with enthusiasm, as the community welcomed the new food venture, marking a personal and professional achievement for Oppelt, who has been living in New Zealand for nine years.
Celebrating a Dream Come True
Oppelt’s opening coincided exactly with her anniversary in New Zealand, adding a moment of joy to her entrepreneurial journey. “Nine years ago, I arrived in New Zealand from South Africa. And that makes it even more special,” she shared, noting the support she received from the community, which included flowers from well-wishers. The store opened its doors at 9:00 a.m., but by 8:00 a.m., eager customers had already lined up in anticipation.
By midday, approximately 50 people had visited Tasty Temptations, a testament to the excitement surrounding the new establishment. “It’s been quite busy. South Africans, Kiwis, locals, as well as people from out of Kaiwaka,” Oppelt explained. She proudly displayed both the South African and Kiwi flags outside her store, emphasizing her intention to serve a diverse clientele.
Unique Offerings and Community Response
The store features a biltong bar, allowing customers to select their preferred cuts of air-dried, cured meat, a delicacy that has proven popular. “You can choose your own steak and just bring it to the counter, and we slice it for you. I don’t think that’s available in other shops. So that’s something different and excites people,” she noted. Additionally, her famous samosas quickly sold out, indicating a strong demand for her culinary offerings.
Preparing the shop took approximately three weeks, with Oppelt working tirelessly alongside her husband to bring her vision to life. The store layout comprises two rooms connected by an open doorway, with the biltong bar situated on the left and the café on the right. “I was here during the day, then I’d go home and in the evening come back with my husband and do some more work,” she recalled.
With Tasty Temptations now open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Oppelt’s hard work and dedication have resulted in a thriving business that not only fulfills her dream but also enriches the local community. The positive response from residents and visitors alike suggests that Tasty Temptations is set to become a cherished addition to Kaiwaka.
