David Nyika Triumphs in Gatton, Dedicates Win to Fiancée Battling Cancer
New Zealand boxer David Nyika celebrated a significant victory on Saturday night, securing a unanimous points decision against Chinese fighter Wuzhati Nuerlang in Gatton, Queensland. This win marked Nyika’s 12th professional victory, improving his record to 12-1. The match, which went the full distance of ten rounds, came at a challenging time for Nyika, as he dedicated the fight to his fiancée, Lexy Thornberry, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy for head and neck cancer.
Nyika’s performance, while effective, lacked the knockout power that many expected after his previous fight. In January 2023, he faced a tough loss against Jai Opetaia on the Gold Coast, and this latest bout was an opportunity for redemption. Although he controlled the fight and won every round according to the judges, Nyika acknowledged that he did not deliver the statement performance he had hoped for.
Emotional Dedication
After the match, an emotional Nyika expressed his love and support for Thornberry, who was unable to attend due to her health condition. “Lexy, I love you. I’m so proud of you. You have been my inspiration, my source of strength and courage,” he stated, fighting back tears. He highlighted their bond, emphasizing the importance of their relationship during this difficult time.
Nyika also commended Nuerlang for his resilience in the ring. Despite being outmatched in height and reach, the Chinese boxer demonstrated significant tenacity, enduring the full ten rounds without being knocked down, marking the first time in Nyika’s professional career that he had gone past the fifth round.
Judges scored the fight entirely in Nyika’s favor, recognizing his superior speed and technique. However, the bout revealed Nyika’s struggle to deliver the decisive combinations needed to secure a more definitive victory. “The last six weeks have been hell,” he admitted, reflecting on the personal challenges he has faced outside of boxing.
Looking Ahead
As Nyika reflects on his performance, he remains focused on future challenges in the cruiserweight division. While this match may not have showcased his full potential, it reinforced his ability to endure and perform under pressure. He noted the importance of returning home to support Thornberry and the significance of their relationship amid the struggles they face.
Nyika’s win in Gatton not only adds to his boxing career but also serves as a reminder of the personal battles that athletes often confront outside the ring. The Kiwi fighter’s dedication to his fiancée illustrates the strength of their connection and the resilience required to overcome life’s hurdles, both in sports and beyond.
