Jamie Joseph Takes Helm of All Blacks XV Ahead of November Matches
Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph has been appointed as the head coach of the All Blacks XV for the next two years, succeeding Clayton McMillan. This decision reflects New Zealand Rugby’s ongoing commitment to harnessing Joseph’s leadership as a potential candidate for the All Blacks coaching position. The All Blacks XV is set to compete in three matches this November, with an initial focus on games against the Barbarians on November 2, 2023, and England ‘A’ on November 9, 2023.
Joseph, who has returned to New Zealand after previously losing the All Blacks job to Scott Robertson, has taken up multiple roles, including director of rugby at the Highlanders. He has since resumed the head coaching position at the Highlanders, making his appointment to the All Blacks XV a logical progression despite the Highlanders’ struggles this season.
New Zealand Rugby’s head of professional rugby performance, Chris Lendrum, emphasized the significance of Joseph’s experience. “Jamie has coached and played at every level of the game,” Lendrum stated. “He has a deep understanding of what it takes to prepare players for international rugby and to win on the global stage. He’s a proven leader who knows how to get the best out of his players and build a strong team identity and culture.”
Joseph has openly expressed his desire to coach the All Blacks and is eager to take on the challenge with the All Blacks XV. “It’s been great coming home to New Zealand after such a long time away, but being part of a team wearing a black jersey will always be special,” he said. He aims to create an environment that challenges players and prepares them for international competition.
The All Blacks XV will finalize their squad on October 14, 2023, with players assembling on October 24, 2023, before their trip to England. Those involved in the National Provincial Championship final will join the squad after the match.
Joseph’s leadership role offers a vital pathway for emerging talent into the All Blacks. Previous players such as Fabian Holland, Du’Plessis Kirifi, and Simon Parker have made the transition through the All Blacks XV setup. The coaching team for the All Blacks XV will include existing assistants Jamie Mackintosh, David Hill, and Cory Jane, ensuring continuity in the coaching framework.
The Highlanders organization expressed pride in Joseph’s new role. Roger Clark, chief executive of the Highlanders, stated, “His legacy here speaks volumes about his leadership and vision. We know he’ll bring the same passion and excellence to the national setup, and we’re excited to see him shape the future of New Zealand rugby.”
As Joseph prepares to lead the All Blacks XV, the rugby community anticipates how his experience and leadership will impact the squad and contribute to New Zealand’s rugby legacy on the international stage.
