Kiwi Boxer David Nyika Wins for Fiancée Battling Cancer
David Nyika, a New Zealand cruiserweight, secured a unanimous points victory over Chinese boxer Wuzhati Nuerlang in Gatton, Queensland, on Saturday night. The win marked an important milestone for Nyika, improving his professional record to 12-1 and marking his second consecutive victory following a knockout loss in January 2023 against Jai Opetaia.
Nyika’s triumph was deeply personal, as he dedicated the fight to his fiancée, Lexy Thornberry, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy for head and neck cancer. Although Thornberry was unable to attend the match due to her treatment, Nyika made his feelings clear during his post-fight interview.
“I love you, Lexy,” the 30-year-old boxer said, visibly emotional. “You have been my inspiration, my source of strength and courage. We’ll get through this together. You are the light of my life.”
The fight itself delivered a performance that showcased Nyika’s skill but fell short of the statement he hoped to make. Despite dominating each round, he struggled to deliver the decisive punches that could have stopped Nuerlang, who, while outmatched in height and reach, demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout the ten-round contest. This was the first time that Nyika had gone the distance in his professional career.
Nyika received unanimous scores from all three judges, who awarded him every round. The Chinese boxer, despite sustaining multiple cuts above his left eye, displayed commendable determination, pushing through the fight without yielding to Nyika’s superior technique and speed.
Reflecting on the match, Nyika commented, “The last six weeks have been hell. To the Thornberry family for putting this event together, this is for Gatton. It’s important for me to go home now and appreciate my woman.”
While Nyika’s performance may not have been the defining showcase he envisioned as he aims to return to the top of the cruiserweight division, it served as a reminder of the personal battles he faces outside the ring. His focus remains on supporting Thornberry during her challenging treatment.
As Nyika looks ahead, he emphasizes the importance of his relationship and the support he draws from it. The fight in Gatton was more than just a professional obligation; it was a heartfelt tribute to his fiancée, highlighting the strength found in love amid adversity.
