On Saturday, Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek demonstrated their resilience at the US Open, battling through challenging matches to secure their spots in the next round. Swiatek, the reigning Wimbledon champion, found herself in a precarious position against Anna Kalinskaya, trailing 5-1 in the opening set. However, she rallied to claim a 7-6(2) 6-4 victory, showcasing her ability to adapt under pressure.

“I’m happy that I came back and kept figuring out and problem-solving,” Swiatek stated after the match. The Polish player struggled with unforced errors, as evidenced by a combined total of 67 errors from both competitors. Despite the difficulties, she saved four set points in the first set and broke late in the second, marking her 20th major match win of the season. This victory places her on equal footing with defending champion and world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Swiatek reflected on the mental challenges of the match, saying, “It’s not easy sometimes to find the solutions… You need to have your mind open enough to think about what you can do.” She now prepares for a round of 16 clash against 13th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Sinner also faced adversity in his match against Denis Shapovalov, the 27th seed. After losing the first set 5-7, Sinner regrouped to secure a 5-7 6-4 6-3 6-3 triumph. “I’m not a machine, you know. I also struggle sometimes,” he admitted, recalling a previous defeat to Shapovalov in their only prior encounter at the 2021 Australian Open. Sinner emphasized the mental fortitude required in every match, stating, “There are players who have more qualities or potential, and he’s one of them. I just tried to stay there mentally.”

While Sinner and Swiatek demonstrated remarkable resolve, not all top seeds enjoyed similar success. World number three Alexander Zverev was eliminated from the tournament after a disappointing performance against Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian rallied from a set down to defeat Zverev with a score of 4-6 7-6(7) 6-4 6-4. As the match progressed, Zverev displayed visible frustration, slamming his racket as Auger-Aliassime’s aggressive play shifted the momentum.

Another significant upset occurred when American 14th seed Tommy Paul lost to Alexander Bublik. Paul was eliminated after a five-set battle, ending with scores of 7-6(5) 6-7(4) 6-3 6-7(5) 6-1. Bublik’s next opponent will be Sinner, setting the stage for an intriguing matchup.

The upcoming fourth-round showdown between Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff promises to capture attention, as both players have shown impressive form. Osaka, a four-time major champion, overcame a mid-match dip to defeat 15th seed Daria Kasatkina 6-0 4-6 6-3. Gauff, the defending champion, dominated her match against Poland’s Magdalena Frech with a convincing 6-3 6-1 victory.

Fans eagerly anticipate a repeat of their memorable encounter from 2019, when Osaka defeated a young Gauff in a match that showcased both sportsmanship and talent. “It would be a cool kind of deja vu type of situation, but hopefully it will be a different result,” Gauff remarked, hinting at the significance of their upcoming clash.

The tournament has also seen notable retirements, reflecting the grueling nature of the competition. A total of nine players have withdrawn from singles matches before the end of the third round, including three on Saturday: Italy’s Flavio Cobolli, Daniel Altmaier, and Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak.

As the US Open progresses, the theme of experience and determination continues to resonate, with both emerging stars and established champions striving for glory on the courts of Flushing Meadows.
