Ben Shelton Returns to ASB Classic for Fourth Straight Year
Ben Shelton, ranked No. 6 in the world, has announced his participation in the upcoming ASB Classic in Auckland this January. The 23-year-old American tennis player will make his fourth consecutive appearance at this tournament, highlighting his commitment to kick off the new season on a strong note.
Shelton has enjoyed a remarkable season, climbing 15 spots in the rankings after achieving his first ATP 1000 victory in Toronto. His impressive performance also included reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open and the quarterfinals at both Wimbledon and the tournaments in Indian Wells and Cincinnati.
In discussing his return to Auckland, Shelton expressed his fondness for the event. “For me, it’s been great preparation, great matches, and a place that I feel comfortable,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of starting the year in an environment where he can thrive. “I enjoy playing there. I’ve played well in the Australian Open after that tournament, and it’s one that I’d like to keep coming back to.”
The Atlanta native’s journey to professional tennis has been marked by a successful collegiate career at the University of Florida, where he was coached by his father. Reflecting on their unique relationship, Shelton acknowledged the complexities of having a family member as a coach. “We have a great relationship. For a relationship like this to work, you must respect each other as father and son and player and coach,” he noted. “I think we have the ultimate respect for each other, and that is the reason we work well together.”
Looking ahead, Shelton is currently in contention to qualify for his first ATP Tour Finals in Turin next month. This prestigious event features the top eight male players from around the world, making it a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. The anticipation surrounding Shelton’s performance in Auckland and beyond adds to the excitement as the tennis season approaches.
