Sterling Express Triumphs in Foxbridge Plate with Spectacular Comeback
Sterling Express made a remarkable statement in the world of horse racing on August 26, 2023, as he clinched victory in the Group 2 Waikato Stud Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa. This was his first foray into Group-level competition, and he proved he is well-equipped for the challenge with a stunning last-to-first performance.
The homebred horse, owned by Gloria Macrae and Brian McKeagg, has shown significant promise throughout his career, having accumulated seven wins from 18 races. His journey to the Foxbridge Plate included three solid victories as a 3-year-old and four more wins last season. His previous race, the $60,000 Winter Championship Sprinters’ Final held at Ruakākā, showcased his ability to surge from the back of the field, marking his biggest win to date.
Entering the Foxbridge Plate, the stakes were notably higher. This $150,000 race represented a significant step up, as it featured top-tier competition at weight-for-age, in stark contrast to his last race against winter open handicaps. Previously, Sterling Express had faced challenges in black-type racing, finishing last in the Listed Trevor & Corallie Memorial at Te Rapa in December 2023.
The race unfolded with unexpected difficulties for Sterling Express. He was slow to leave the starting gates and found himself at the back of the pack. This positioning was particularly disadvantageous, given that the race was dominated by front-runners. The first four horses rounding the home turn finished in the top six, with Lhasa leading the charge after sitting just outside the front-running Sacred Satono before taking control early in the straight.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Sterling Express displayed remarkable tenacity and skill. As the race progressed, he began to close the gap, demonstrating his speed and agility. His impressive final sprint not only secured him the victory but also solidified his place among the elite in the sport.
With this victory, Sterling Express has set a high bar for future performances, showcasing his potential to excel at higher levels of competition. As the racing season continues, fans and analysts alike will be keenly watching his next moves, eager to see if he can maintain this momentum.
