Swiatek and Sinner Dominate First Round at US Open 2023

In a commanding display, past champions Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner advanced to the second round of the 2023 US Open, decisively defeating their first-round opponents on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The tournament, now in its expanded 15-day format, thrilled fans eager for top-tier tennis, particularly as they awaited the evening match featuring local favorite Coco Gauff.
On Tuesday, Swiatek showcased her remarkable form, following her recent triumph at the Cincinnati tournament. She overpowered Emiliana Arango with a swift 6-1 6-2 victory, completing the match in just one hour without facing a single break point. Reflecting on the challenges of competing in the vibrant atmosphere of New York, Swiatek noted, “Every year is kind of tough… But I’ve got to say I’m probably good at it compared to other players, so I’m really trying to be in my bubble.”
Strong Performances from Defending Champions
Following Swiatek, defending men’s champion Sinner took to the court and delivered an equally impressive performance. He dismissed Czech player Vit Kopriva with a score of 6-1 6-1 6-2, setting up a second-round clash with Australian Alexei Popyrin. Despite entering the tournament amid controversy related to doping tests, Sinner received strong support from the crowd, demonstrating his resilience.
On the adjacent Louis Armstrong Stadium, Lorenzo Musetti, seeded 10th, battled through a challenging match against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, eventually winning 6-7(3) 6-3 6-4 6-4. Musetti will next face Belgian player David Goffin. Meanwhile, American eighth seed Amanda Anisimova cruised past Kimberly Birrell of Australia, winning decisively at 6-3 6-2 and showcasing her powerful game with 17 winners.
Evening Matches Highlight Star Players
As the day transitioned to evening, attention turned to the much-anticipated match featuring Coco Gauff. The American star is eager to address her recent serve issues after parting ways with coach Matt Daly. Gauff, a finalist in 2020 and fresh off her victory at Roland Garros, faced Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in a critical match for her season.
In the late match, Alexander Zverev, a two-time finalist, began his quest for a maiden Grand Slam title against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo. The German third seed aims to reclaim his top form after injuries sidelined him in recent competitions.
Additionally, former champion Naomi Osaka received a warm welcome from fans as she began her campaign on the Grandstand against Belgian Greet Minnen. Osaka, who reached the final in Montreal earlier this month, is looking to regain her status among the elite players in the sport.
In the final match of the night at Armstrong, Tommy Paul, the 14th seed from the US, faced Denmark’s Elmer Moller, closing out an exciting day of tennis at the US Open.
The first round of the US Open continues to showcase thrilling matches and the potential for upsets, as players vie for the coveted title on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
