Warriors Women Secure Mele Hufanga for 2026 NRLW Season
The Warriors women’s rugby league team has made a significant addition to their roster for the upcoming 2026 NRLW season by signing centre Mele Hufanga. Hufanga joins fellow premiership winner Gayle Broughton, who recently secured a two-year deal with the team. The announcement comes just three days after the Warriors confirmed Broughton’s signing, marking another strategic move for the club.
Hufanga, aged 30, recently showcased her talent by winning the Karyn Murphy Medal for her outstanding performance in the grand final, where the Brisbane Broncos triumphed over the Roosters with a score of 22-18. Throughout her career, Hufanga has made a notable impact, beginning with her rugby union journey in Auckland, where she represented Tonga three times. Transitioning to rugby league in 2023, she has made 32 appearances for the Broncos and scored 24 tries.
Key Recruitment for the Warriors
In addition to her club success, Hufanga has worn the jersey of the Kiwi Ferns, representing New Zealand on four occasions. She has also been named in the squad for the upcoming Pacific Championship. Head coach Ron Griffiths expressed enthusiasm about Hufanga’s signing, stating, “We identified Mele as a key recruit for the Warriors. She’s a powerful world-class centre who will bring a wealth of experience to our club.”
Hufanga’s excitement about joining the Warriors is palpable. She remarked, “It’s really special heading back home next year to the Warriors, and even better I get to be with my family.” This sentiment highlights the personal significance of the move for Hufanga, adding a layer of emotional resonance to her professional achievements.
With the Warriors bolstering their lineup with experienced players like Hufanga and Broughton, fans can look forward to an exciting season ahead. These strategic signings reflect the team’s commitment to building a competitive squad capable of challenging for the championship in the forthcoming season.
