Authorities Urge Public to Avoid Phillips’ Hiding Locations
Authorities are cautioning the public against trespassing on private property linked to Phillips, who lived in hiding for nearly four years. The sites, located near Te Anga Road, are still considered active crime scenes as investigators continue to gather evidence. Although police have lifted cordons in the area, they stress the importance of maintaining a safe distance.
On Monday, Phillips died after engaging in a violent confrontation with law enforcement, during which he shot and critically injured a police officer. The incident occurred following a burglary in Piopio. According to police reports, Phillips opened fire after officers spiked his quad bike, hitting the constable in the head and shoulder. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding Phillips.
The injured officer is currently receiving treatment at Waikato Hospital. In a related development, one of Phillips’ children was detained at the scene, while two others were found unharmed later that day in nearby dense bush. The children are now under the care of Oranga Tamariki, the government agency responsible for child welfare in New Zealand.
Investigations Reveal Makeshift Camps
Following the tragic incident, police discovered several makeshift camps that the family had been utilizing. The recovery operation yielded various items, including quad and trail bikes, tarpaulins, oil containers, tools, and even a toilet bowl. Photographs from the scene depict tents camouflaged with netting and local vegetation, suggesting a prolonged period of concealment.
Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders indicated that evidence points to Phillips having received assistance during his time in hiding. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the extent of any potential support he may have had.
As investigations progress, law enforcement emphasizes that the public should respect the boundaries of private property and refrain from entering the area without permission. The ongoing nature of the investigation requires that these locations remain undisturbed to ensure the integrity of the evidence being collected.
