Authorities Warn Against Trespassing on Phillips’ Hideouts
Authorities have issued a warning to the public regarding trespassing on private property linked to the late Phillips, who lived in hiding for nearly four years. Investigators emphasize that anyone entering these areas without authorization will be considered trespassers. Although cordons on Te Anga Road have been lifted, officials are urging both the media and the public to remain clear of the sites, which are still active crime scenes as evidence is collected.
Phillips died on March 15, 2024, following a confrontation with police during a burglary in Piopio. According to law enforcement, Phillips opened fire after his quad bike was spiked, hitting a police officer in the head and shoulder. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding Phillips. The injured constable is currently receiving treatment at Waikato Hospital.
In the aftermath of the shooting, two of Phillips’ children were found unharmed nearby in dense bush, while another child was detained at the shooting scene. The children are now under the care of Oranga Tamariki, New Zealand’s Ministry for Children.
Investigators have since discovered multiple makeshift camps where Phillips and his family had been living. Recovered items include quad and trail bikes, tarpaulins, oil containers, tools, and even a toilet bowl. Photographs of the scene depict tents camouflaged with netting and vegetation, suggesting an extended period of concealment.
Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders commented on the findings, noting that the evidence indicates Phillips likely received assistance from others during his time in hiding. This revelation raises questions about the extent of support he may have had and the network that could have facilitated his evasion from law enforcement.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain focused on gathering further evidence and clarifying the circumstances surrounding Phillips’ activities. The public’s cooperation in respecting the boundaries set around these crime scenes is deemed critical for the ongoing inquiry.
