New Zealand’s Mitchell will miss the remainder of the one-day international series against the West Indies after sustaining a minor injury. The incident occurred during his impressive performance on Sunday, where he scored his seventh ODI century, contributing to a narrow seven-run victory at Hagley Oval. Following the match, Mitchell experienced discomfort in his thigh and did not take part in the West Indies’ innings.

The team confirmed on Monday that Mitchell will remain in Christchurch while the rest of the squad travels to Napier for the second ODI scheduled on Wednesday. A scan revealed a minor groin tear, which will necessitate approximately two weeks of rehabilitation. According to a statement from New Zealand Cricket, the prognosis indicates that he should be fit to return for the three-Test series against the West Indies, commencing on December 2 at Hagley Oval.

Team Adjustments and Future Matches

In light of Mitchell’s absence, Canterbury batter Henry Nicholls has been called up as a replacement and will stay with the squad for the remainder of the series. Rob Walter, the team’s coach, noted, “He [Mitchell] has been our standout performer in the ODI format so far this summer, so he’ll be missed for two important matches.” Walter expressed confidence in Nicholls’ ability, stating, “Henry has been in top form in the Ford Trophy and is an experienced international cricketer, so it’s great to welcome him back into the side.”

The next match in the series will take place in Hamilton on Saturday. Following this, the West Indies will participate in a tour match against a selection side in Lincoln next week, before gearing up for the Test series.

As New Zealand looks to maintain their competitive edge without Mitchell, the focus will turn to how the team adapts in the coming matches against the West Indies. His contributions have been significant, and the squad will be eager to fill the gap left by his injury.
