Police Crack Down on Suspicious Fires Amid Ongoing Ban
Police in the Canterbury region have ramped up efforts to address a series of suspicious fires following the implementation of a fire ban on March 15, 2024. Superintendent Tony Hill, the district commander, expressed disappointment over the ongoing incidents and indicated that arrests are likely as investigations progress. The ban, initiated by Fire and Emergency NZ, aims to mitigate the risk of wildfires, especially with severe weather conditions expected in the coming days.
As reported, the fire ban encompasses the entire Canterbury region and extends into South Canterbury, from the boundary with Marlborough north of Kaikoura to the Waitaki River. Superintendent Hill emphasized the importance of adhering to the ban, stating, “Do not light outdoor fires for any reason.” The restriction also prohibits the use of fireworks and outdoor gas cookers.
Investigations Underway Following Multiple Blazes
Authorities have received numerous reports of fires ignited since the ban was enacted. Superintendent Hill confirmed that police are actively monitoring the area for new fires while conducting investigations into existing suspicious blazes. “Police will be investigating any suspicious fires and may prosecute those responsible,” he added.
This week, firefighters faced significant challenges as they dealt with several large vegetation fires that resulted in extensive damage and property loss. The most devastating incident occurred in Kaikoura, where five homes were destroyed due to the swift spread of flames. Contributing factors included strong winds, high temperatures, and low humidity, all of which made firefighting efforts particularly difficult.
Public Urged to Report Suspicious Activity
Superintendent Hill has called upon the public to remain vigilant during this period of heightened fire risk. He urged anyone who witnesses a fire being lit in violation of the ban to contact emergency services immediately by dialing 111.
As police continue their investigations and monitor the situation, they remain committed to ensuring public safety and preventing the escalation of wildfires in the Canterbury region. The fire ban is currently set to remain in effect until at least March 18, 2024, but may be extended depending on weather conditions and fire activity.
