Man Arrested for Arson After Dunedin House Fire
A 48-year-old man has been arrested and charged with arson following a significant fire that destroyed a house in central Dunedin. The incident occurred in the early hours of March 5, 2024, when residents on Lees Street were awakened by a large blaze consuming an unoccupied home. Firefighters worked for hours to control the fire, which prompted the evacuation of nearby residents.
According to Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond of Dunedin, the accused is set to appear in the Dunedin District Court later today. This fire was one of three suspicious blazes reported within a few hours, starting late on Monday night.
The first fire broke out at approximately 23:30 local time on Harrow Street, causing severe damage to a vacant commercial building. A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency NZ (Fenz) indicated that this fire escalated to second-alarm status, necessitating the deployment of multiple fire appliances. Initially, there were concerns that the building might have been occupied, but this was later confirmed not to be the case.
Around an hour later, emergency services responded to a fire in a stand of trees near the Otago Pistol Club located in Waldronville. Police reported that a stack of newspapers was found in proximity to this fire, which is also believed to have been intentionally ignited. The flames from this incident reportedly burned for about thirty minutes before being extinguished.
Fenz has stated that investigators will be looking into the circumstances surrounding these fires. The quick response from the emergency services prevented further damage and ensured the safety of residents in the vicinity. The implications of this series of events highlight the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in addressing arson incidents in the region.
