Young Suspect in Custody After Stabbing of Uber Driver in Gold Coast

A female rideshare driver was attacked and left critically injured in a car park at a shopping centre on the Gold Coast early on March 15, 2024. The 32-year-old woman was discovered semi-conscious in her vehicle by a security guard, who called emergency services. She was subsequently transported to Gold Coast University Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition due to multiple stab wounds to her head, neck, and back.

Authorities have reported that a 16-year-old boy from Coomera is currently assisting police with their investigation into the incident. According to Detective Inspector Paul Fletcher, the woman had picked up a male passenger in Hope Island, and they traveled to Coomera before the attack occurred around 1:25 AM. Detective Inspector Fletcher stated, “Our investigations indicate that she was there for an hour or two before being discovered by the security guard.”

Following the attack, police cordoned off part of the Foxwell Road shopping centre to conduct a thorough search of the area. A dog squad was deployed to assist in the investigation, as authorities seek to uncover the motive behind the attack and the circumstances that led the driver to the shopping centre in the early hours.

The suspect has been described as a male in his late teens to early twenties, with dark hair. He was last seen wearing a green T-shirt and grey tracksuit pants. Police are urging anyone who may have information or dashcam footage from Foxwell Road between 11 PM and midnight to come forward.

Both Uber and the management of the shopping centre are cooperating with the investigation, providing any necessary information to assist law enforcement. The community has been shaken by this violent incident, highlighting concerns surrounding the safety of rideshare drivers and the general public.
