Passengers on a Wellington train endured a challenging ordeal on March 15, 2024, as they were stranded for more than three hours due to a fallen overhead power cable. The incident involved the Waikanae service, which became immobilized on the bridge over Hutt Rd after the cable came down at approximately 07:40. The disruption affected three trains in total.

The passengers, who found themselves stuck around 08:00, faced a difficult situation as they awaited assistance. Geoffrey Weal, one of the commuters on board, described how the train remained halted until around 11:00. He noted that crew members informed passengers that a power cable had snapped and was lying across the train.

To address the urgent needs of those trapped on the train, staff distributed “travel johns,” or disposable toilet bags. This improvised solution was a necessary measure, given the prolonged delay and the lack of accessible facilities.

While the incident was undoubtedly inconvenient, it also highlighted the challenges of urban transport systems and the importance of effective crisis management. The swift response from train staff in providing basic necessities demonstrated a commitment to passenger care during an unexpected situation.

As service slowly resumed following the repairs, commuters were left reflecting on their experience. Delays such as this serve as reminders of the potential vulnerabilities within transport networks, particularly during adverse weather or technical failures.
