Demolition Begins on Long-Abandoned Khandallah Home
Residents of Kabul Street in Khandallah, a suburb of Wellington, are expressing relief as demolition work has commenced on a long-abandoned house that had become a source of distress for the community. The house, which dates back to the 1980s, has been deteriorating for years, accumulating mould and emitting a strong, unpleasant odour.
Local resident Paul Ash described the situation, stating that the property had transformed into “an industrial-sized puffball of mould spores.” He noted that the abandoned house not only affected the quality of life for nearby residents but also attracted criminal activity to the area.
Earlier this month, RNZ reported on the growing concerns surrounding the property, highlighting the impact it had on the street’s environment. Following the report, the owner of the home acknowledged the situation and confirmed that demolition would begin around September 17.
This decision has brought a sense of hope to residents who had been voicing their complaints for years. The presence of steel gates and warning signs marks a significant step toward restoring the area. Residents are optimistic that the removal of the dilapidated building will not only improve the aesthetic of their neighborhood but also enhance safety and property values in the vicinity.
The demolition serves as a reminder of the importance of community engagement and the impact that neglected properties can have on local residents. Khandallah residents are now looking forward to a cleaner and safer environment as the demolition progresses.
