Napier Trust Seeks Government Support for Homelessness Services

The trust responsible for establishing the Āhuru Mōwai night shelter in Napier is preparing to advocate for increased government funding to address homelessness in regional areas. This follows a government announcement on March 15, 2024, detailing a new allocation of $17 million aimed at enhancing services in major cities including Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch.
Trust chair Mark Cleary expressed his surprise at the funding announcement, particularly after a recent meeting with Napier MP Katie Nimon. During their discussion, they addressed the need for sustainable funding for the night shelter, which opened in June 2023. The conversation also highlighted the pressing homelessness issues in Napier, especially in light of the recent closure of the Outreach Centre at Clive Square, which had served the community for many years.
“There’s really nothing in it for Hawke’s Bay,” Cleary stated, indicating that the funding appears to overlook the needs of less populated regions. The Āhuru Mōwai night shelter has become a vital resource for those experiencing homelessness in the area, and the trust is concerned about maintaining adequate support without government assistance.
Cleary’s comments reflect a broader issue faced by many provincial areas in New Zealand, where resources are often concentrated in larger urban centers. As discussions around homelessness continue, the trust plans to engage with government officials to ensure that the needs of communities like Napier are not neglected.
The implications of this funding distribution raise questions about the government’s commitment to addressing homelessness across the country. While cities like Auckland and Wellington receive significant investments, regions such as Hawke’s Bay are left to advocate for their share of support. The Āhuru Mōwai trust is now poised to challenge this trend, emphasizing the importance of equitable resource allocation for all New Zealanders.
As the situation develops, the trust aims to gather community support and potentially mobilize resources to advocate for their cause. The urgency of addressing homelessness cannot be overstated, as individuals and families continue to seek shelter and stability in an increasingly challenging environment. The outcome of this advocacy could shape the future of homelessness services in Napier and beyond.
