Pakuranga Park Village Celebrates 40 Years of Community Living
On September 24, 2024, Pakuranga Park Village celebrated its 40th anniversary with a vibrant event themed ‘Bubbles and Pearls.’ Over 300 residents gathered for the occasion, which transformed the Lodge into a festive setting filled with elegance and charm. Guests donned their finest attire and enjoyed a unique ‘fork and walk’ dining experience, sampling a variety of delicious food and drinks while mingling with friends and neighbors.
Musicians provided lively entertainment, performing a mix of timeless classics and contemporary favorites, creating an energetic atmosphere that encouraged residents to dance and celebrate together. The event was a reflection of the community spirit that has flourished at Pakuranga Park Village since its inception.
From Pasture to Retirement Community
The land that now houses Pakuranga Park Village was originally owned by the Catholic Church, primarily used for grazing horses. In 1984, Graeme Collins purchased the site with the vision of developing a lifestyle village tailored for individuals aged 55 and over. At that time, the concept of a retirement village was relatively new in New Zealand. Pakuranga Park Village was among the first to offer occupancy under an Occupation Licence, which later became the model for the Occupation Right Agreement recognized under the Retirement Villages Act.
Architect Erin Murphy joined Collins shortly after the purchase, bringing the necessary design and construction expertise. Development began in 1985, with initial stages consisting of small clusters of homes. By the late 1980s, Erin and his wife Lynnette Murphy took ownership of the property, further shaping the vision for the community.
Memorable Moments and Future Celebrations
Among the residents, Daphne Ellwood, the village’s longest-standing resident at 100 years old, reflects on her time at Pakuranga Park Village since 1999. She shared a poignant memory of reconnecting with a childhood friend, Mary Phipps, after decades apart. The two, who lived just a short distance from one another in Christchurch as teenagers, found joy in performing together at the village well into Daphne’s late eighties.
Looking ahead, residents are invited to a photography exhibition on November 15-16, showcasing images from the anniversary celebration and treasured memories from the past four decades. This exhibit promises to encapsulate the rich history and community spirit that has defined Pakuranga Park Village.
Pakuranga Park Village remains a testament to innovative living for seniors, fostering connections and creating lasting memories within a supportive community. As the village embarks on the next chapter, it continues to embody the principles of care, companionship, and fulfillment that have characterized its first forty years.
