New Zealand Publisher Recalls Children’s Book Over Safety Errors
The publisher of a popular children’s book in New Zealand has issued a recall due to incorrect information regarding the safety of certain edible flowers. Bateman Books announced on March 15, 2024, that it is resupplying all copies of the activity book Play Wild after an author error listed potentially toxic plants as safe for consumption.
The book, which is a finalist for the NZSA Best First Book Award 2025, encourages children, or tamariki in Māori, to engage in various outdoor craft projects. It aims to foster a connection with nature through a series of activities designed for young readers. However, a concerning claim on page 46 has prompted the immediate action to remove the book from sale.
In a statement, author Rachel Clare expressed regret over the misleading information, emphasizing the intention behind the book. “We want tamariki to spend time outside and be connected to the natural world, and we apologise for publishing any unclear information,” Clare said. She acknowledged the responsibility of Bateman Books in addressing the issue swiftly.
The recall affects all retail copies across New Zealand, with the publisher urging consumers to return the book for a corrected version. Bateman Books is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its young readers, and the decision to halt sales reflects a proactive approach to rectifying the error.
In light of this situation, the publisher is working diligently to replace the faulty page with accurate information regarding which plants are indeed safe to eat. This correction process aims to reassure parents and caregivers that the activities within Play Wild are both enjoyable and safe.
The incident highlights the importance of accuracy in children’s literature, particularly when it involves topics related to food and nature. As society increasingly emphasizes outdoor play and learning, the responsibility falls on publishers and authors to provide trustworthy guidance.
As the recall takes effect, Bateman Books encourages feedback from customers and aims to maintain transparency throughout the correction process. The publisher’s swift response has been met with appreciation from the community, reinforcing the need for vigilance regarding safety in children’s educational materials.
Going forward, Bateman Books plans to enhance its review protocols to prevent similar oversights in the future. The commitment to safety and accuracy remains a top priority, ensuring that Play Wild fulfills its mission of encouraging outdoor exploration without compromising the well-being of its young audience.
