Search Efforts Renewed for Missing Man Off Whangarei Coast
Authorities have announced that the search for a missing man off the coast of Whangarei will continue on the morning of August 26, 2023. This effort follows the disappearance of two individuals who were last reported on a fishing boat expected to return to the coastal area of Pataua South by 19:00 on August 25.
The boat was discovered empty by local authorities, prompting an immediate response from search and rescue teams. Shortly after the boat’s recovery, a member of the public located the body of one of the missing men in the water. Despite extensive searches conducted throughout the day by the Police Dive Squad and volunteers from Coastguard Tūtūkākā and Coastguard Whangarei, the second individual remains unaccounted for.

Rescue operations commenced promptly after the boat’s discovery, with teams utilizing both watercraft and aerial surveillance to cover a broad area of the coastline. The police confirmed that the search would resume at first light, as teams continue to hope for a positive outcome.
