Urgent Search for Missing 11-Year-Old Boy in British Columbia

An 11-year-old boy, Kai Pavlovic, has gone missing in British Columbia, prompting an extensive search effort by local authorities. Kai’s family, both in New Zealand and Canada, have expressed serious concerns for his safety following his disappearance. The Burnaby Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are actively seeking public assistance to locate him.
On September 26, 2023, police received a request for a wellbeing check on Kai. According to a statement from the Burnaby RCMP, investigators have contacted family members and believe Kai may be staying with a caretaker who is currently unknown to authorities. Despite various investigative strategies employed over the following days, efforts to confirm his whereabouts have not yet yielded results.
The police have dedicated numerous resources to this case, with officers working “around the clock” to find Kai. A spokesperson for the Burnaby RCMP emphasized the importance of raising awareness about his disappearance and sharing his photograph with the public. “Our investigators are making every effort to find Kai, and we are asking for the public’s help as part of those ongoing efforts,” the spokeswoman said.
As part of their appeal, police clarified the criteria for issuing an Amber Alert, which is activated only when there is a confirmed abduction and imminent danger to the child. Currently, the information available does not meet those criteria, but officers continue to gather leads.
In response to the situation, a Givealittle page has been established to support Kai’s family in Christchurch, who have had limited contact with him over the past year. Concerns regarding his wellbeing were raised by family members from his deceased father’s side and subsequently shared with his New Zealand family. This prompted the family to request the welfare check that ultimately led to the missing-person investigation.
The family’s statement on the fundraising page highlighted their ongoing worries: “All attempts to ensure Kai’s wellbeing have failed, and family have grave concerns for his safety.” They have announced plans to travel to Canada to assist in the search for answers regarding Kai’s disappearance.
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) confirmed awareness of the situation, indicating that their high commission in Ottawa has provided initial support to a family member. For privacy reasons, further details were not disclosed, but the ministry has directed the family to resources available on the SafeTravel website.
As the search continues, authorities urge anyone with information about Kai’s whereabouts or who may be caring for him to contact local police immediately. The urgency of this case underscores the need for community support in locating the young boy and ensuring his safety.
