Silver Ferns Snatch Last-Minute Win to Sweep Taini Jamison Trophy
The Silver Ferns secured a thrilling 57-56 victory over South Africa on October 14, 2023, completing a clean sweep of the Taini Jamison Trophy series. With the score tied at 56 and only 20 seconds remaining, South Africa attempted to control the game, aiming for their first win against the Silver Ferns in 30 years. However, New Zealand’s Gordon intercepted the ball, leading to a dramatic play that concluded with Martina Salmon scoring the winning shot.
Stadium Southland erupted in cheers as Salmon celebrated with a fist pump, capping off a game filled with tension and excitement. The match featured two suspensions and saw the Proteas build a significant lead at various points, demonstrating their competitive spirit throughout the encounter.
South Africa initially took control, leading by as much as seven points early in the match. Their captain, Khanyisa Chawane, playing in her 100th test, and teammate Tarle Mathe effectively used their speed to penetrate the Silver Ferns’ defense. The Proteas took an early lead of 12-8 after the first quarter, maintaining momentum with a strong performance that saw them win the opening quarters in the latter two tests of the series.
As the game progressed, the Silver Ferns struggled with their attack, often driving laterally rather than penetrating the South African defense. Nonetheless, they managed to rally in the final quarter when South African defender Nicola Smith was suspended. This shift allowed the Silver Ferns to take a three-goal lead, but the match remained tightly contested.
The Silver Ferns regained their composure after trailing 43-41 at the end of the third quarter. They displayed renewed determination in the second half, with Salmon’s aggressive drives creating opportunities for Grace Nweke to score. Nweke finished the match with an impressive 49 out of 54 attempts, demonstrating her scoring prowess.
The final quarter saw the Silver Ferns outscoring South Africa 16-13, ultimately sealing their victory. The final statistics highlighted the competitive nature of the match, with South Africa’s Elmere van der Berg scoring 46 out of 51 attempts and Owethu Ngubane adding 10 out of 14.
This remarkable win not only clinched the Taini Jamison Trophy for the Silver Ferns but also showcased the resilience and skill of both teams. The Proteas, despite their loss, put in a commendable effort, proving they are a formidable opponent on the international stage.
