Demand for Support Services Surges in Gore Community
The demand for food, shelter, and support services in Gore, New Zealand, is on the rise, as highlighted by local community ministries navigator, Michelle Chirnside of the Salvation Army. Chirnside noted that while the need for assistance has always existed, it is becoming increasingly pressing. She emphasized that this issue is not confined to Gore but reflects a growing trend across the nation.
The community’s response has been notably supportive. “They support our food bank, and the local churches, people, and community groups support us, which makes a huge difference,” Chirnside stated. A prime example of this community spirit is the recent achievement of the Gore River Valley Lions’ Toot for Tucker initiative, which collected over 7,000 supermarket items for clients in need.
Chirnside pointed out that food insecurity is affecting all demographics, with families often sacrificing meals when faced with financial challenges. “Food is the first thing people will sacrifice,” she said. Compounding this issue is the lack of emergency housing in Gore. The impending closure of the Gore Motor Camp, following a lease termination by the Gore District Council due to health and safety concerns, is set to exacerbate the situation. The camp’s operations are expected to cease by January 31, 2024.
Despite the challenges, Chirnside encourages her clients to avoid the campground, as alternative emergency housing and mental health services are already “overloaded.” Notably, she mentioned that local schools have not indicated a significant increase in requests for food support, and her clientele have not been severely impacted by the strong winds experienced in October.
The primary concern remains the rising cost of living, which is significantly affecting families in the area. Chirnside stressed that it does not take much for low-income households to fall into a cycle of poverty, with seemingly minor setbacks like a car breaking down or a child’s birthday celebration leading to severe financial strain.
The situation in Gore serves as a microcosm of a wider national issue regarding food insecurity and support services. The resilience of the local community, as demonstrated through initiatives like Toot for Tucker, highlights the importance of collective action in addressing these pressing needs. As the demand for support continues to grow, the community’s ability to adapt and respond will be crucial in providing necessary assistance to those most vulnerable.
