New Zealand Opera Star Appointed Deputy Head of Royal College

Prof. Pene Pati Lemalu, a distinguished opera singer from Dunedin, has been appointed as the deputy head of the Vocal and Opera Department at the Royal College of Music in London. This prestigious institution, widely regarded as one of the top music schools globally, marks a significant milestone in Lemalu’s career. He becomes the first New Zealander to assume a leadership role at the college since the late Bryan Drake served as director of opera from 1981 to 1985.
Lemalu, who is also the first Samoan to hold such a position in a higher education conservatoire in the northern hemisphere, expressed his excitement about this new chapter. “This appointment is a huge privilege,” he stated. He highlighted the Royal College’s consistent ranking as the global number one university for music and performing arts, as confirmed by the QS World University Rankings for the past three years.
Significant Contributions and Achievements
Having been a professor of vocal studies at the Royal College since 2023, Lemalu brings a wealth of experience to his new role. “The Vocal and Opera Department boasts a remarkable list of alumni who have established successful international careers, supported by an esteemed faculty with significant performance backgrounds,” he noted. In the realm of education and mentorship, he regards this position as a pinnacle achievement.
Despite his new administrative responsibilities, Lemalu will continue to perform. He described his role as part-time, allowing him to maintain his singing career, which is essential for staying connected to industry trends. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue singing,” he emphasized.
A Rich History and Future Endeavors
Lemalu’s connection to the Royal College of Music dates back to his studies there from 1999 to 2002, during which he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Scholar. His accolades include some of the college’s most prestigious honors, such as the Queen Elizabeth Rosebowl and the Tagore Gold Medal. His talents have also earned him the Royal Over-Seas League Gold Medal and the Llangollen Young Singer of the World title.
Throughout his career, he has graced the stages of leading opera houses and concert halls worldwide. His recordings have received critical acclaim, including the Debut Disc of the Year award at the Gramophone Classical Music Awards and the award for Best Opera Recording at the 52nd Grammy Awards in 2010.
In addition to his performing career, Lemalu has garnered respect as a vocal technician, mentor, and educator. His involvement extends to various assessment panels for competitions like the Kathleen Ferrier Award and the Royal Over-Seas League Gold Medal. He has also served as a guest commentator for events such as the Cardiff Singer of the World competition.
Artistic director of the Royal College of Music, Andrew Moore, commented on Lemalu’s appointment, stating that the recruitment process was “extremely competitive.” He praised Lemalu’s musical understanding and his commitment to teaching, noting that his vast experience would inspire and guide students in this new role.
As Prof. Lemalu embarks on this new journey, the global music community anticipates the impact he will have on future generations of vocalists and the continued success of the Royal College of Music.
