Hollie Davidson Set to Referee All Blacks vs. Wales Test Match
In a historic appointment, Hollie Davidson has been selected to referee the upcoming test match between the New Zealand All Blacks and Wales on November 22, 2023, in Cardiff. This announcement comes as part of World Rugby‘s panel for the November internationals, solidifying Davidson’s position as a trailblazer in the sport.
Davidson, aged 33, recently officiated her second Women’s Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham in London, making her the first woman to achieve this milestone. Following her remarkable performance, she was named World Rugby’s Referee of the Year. With over 46 matches officiated, Davidson has already made significant strides in the men’s game, with more than a quarter of her matches being in this arena.
Breaking New Ground in Rugby Officiating
Davidson’s achievements include being the first woman to referee a men’s Six Nations team. In June 2022, she led an all-female officiating team during Italy’s victory over Portugal, which ended 38-31. This groundbreaking moment not only showcased her skills but also highlighted the increasing presence of women in traditionally male-dominated roles within rugby.
In addition to the All Blacks versus Wales match, Davidson will also officiate the game between Portugal and Hong Kong China. She has been appointed as an assistant referee for the match between Italy and Australia, further demonstrating her versatility and expertise in officiating at the highest levels of rugby.
Upcoming Fixtures Featuring Top Referees
Alongside Davidson, prominent referees will oversee other key matches during the November internationals. French referee Pierre Broussert will take charge of the All Blacks’ opening match against Ireland in Chicago on November 1. Australian Nic Berry is set to officiate the test against Scotland in Edinburgh on November 8, while Italian Andrea Piardi will control the test match against England at Twickenham on November 15.
Hollie Davidson’s role in the upcoming test against Wales not only marks an important moment in her career but also signifies the changing landscape of rugby officiating, where female referees are gaining recognition and respect on the world stage. As she prepares for this high-profile match, many fans and players alike will be keenly watching her progress in the sport.
