Explore Scenic Walk from Eastern Beach to Macleans Park

Walking enthusiasts have a delightful opportunity to explore the scenic route from Eastern Beach to Macleans Park, a journey that spans approximately 4.5 kilometers and offers a variety of stunning landscapes. In his latest column, keen walker David Mallowes shares insights on this accessible path that caters to both leisurely strollers and those seeking a more vigorous workout.
Eastern Beach is renowned for its beautiful white sands and safe swimming conditions, making it a popular destination for families and visitors alike. Adjacent to the southern end of the beach, Macleans Park serves as a crucial green space for the eastern suburbs of Auckland. Spanning 36 hectares, the park is a vibrant hub for walkers, runners, families, and pet owners, providing a perfect escape into nature.
Historical Significance of Macleans Park
The area holds historical significance, having been home to the Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki iwi. The park derives its name from the Maclean family, who owned farmland here since the 1850s. By the latter part of the century, the land transitioned through various owners, including Auckland lawyer John Bacot and Sir William Goodfellow, who generously donated the land to the Auckland City Council in 1973. The park’s rich history is complemented by sweeping views of the Hauraki Gulf, with the distinctive silhouettes of Rangitoto Island and Browns Island visible from its ridges.
Visitors can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the park, which features tracks leading into gullies filled with regenerating native bush. These areas serve as habitats for native birds such as tui, kereru, and piwaka.
A Guide to the Walking Route
Starting at the southern end of Eastern Beach, walkers can ascend a metalled path, veering left towards Bleakhouse Road. The trail keeps to the reserve, passing by playgrounds equipped with swings and a flying fox before descending back toward the beach. From there, paths lead uphill toward the tennis courts, where walkers can enjoy clifftop views before descending down the beach steps.
Those wanting to extend their journey can continue along the beach at low tide, heading north towards Musick Point or south to Mellons Bay, Howick Beach, Cockle Bay, and Mangemangeroa. The area permits dogs to roam off-leash in both Macleans Park and Eastern Beach, although restrictions apply during summer from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m..
The walk is suitable for pushchairs, though the uphill track from the beach is made of metal. For families, there is a popular playground located just 200 meters along the beach from the car park, along with restroom facilities.
Nearby, the Golden Sands café and restaurant offers refreshments, while a dairy and other dining options can be found further along the beach. For those looking to capture their walking experience, Mallowes encourages readers to visit the WalksOutEast Facebook page for photographs and updates.
For a more structured exploration, the East Auckland Walkfest runs until October 5, featuring guided walks ranging from 3 kilometers to 12 kilometers through the park. Interested participants can find more information by visiting the East Auckland Tourism website.
This scenic route from Eastern Beach to Macleans Park not only promotes physical activity but also allows participants to connect with the rich history and natural beauty of the region.
