Lanes on Tāmaki Drive Close for Workers’ Rights March
A section of Tāmaki Drive in Auckland will experience lane closures today as iwi, unions, and activists participate in a march advocating for the rights of tangata whenua and workers. The eastbound lanes will be closed between Ōkahu Bay and The Strand from 11:45 to approximately 13:15 local time, according to police.
The partial road closure aims to ensure the safety of all road users during the march. Authorities have advised motorists to anticipate potential traffic delays and to consider alternative routes when possible.
The event is part of Rā Whakamana, a national day of solidarity intended to reaffirm the tino rangatiratanga of tangata whenua and to protect the rights and wellbeing of all workers. This initiative is supported by both the National Iwi Chairs Forum and the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, who issued a statement highlighting the significance of the event.
Participants in the march will advocate for the recognition and protection of indigenous rights and labor rights, underscoring a broader movement aimed at social justice and equity. The event reflects growing public support for these issues, with many calling for systemic change that addresses the historical and ongoing challenges faced by indigenous communities and workers in New Zealand.
As the march proceeds, it serves as a reminder of the collective power of communities coming together for a common cause. The cooperation between iwi, unions, and activists illustrates a united front in the pursuit of rights and recognition for all, enhancing awareness around these pressing social issues.
Motorists and residents in the area are encouraged to stay informed about the ongoing situation and to exercise caution as the march unfolds. The collaboration among various groups highlights a significant moment in New Zealand’s ongoing dialogue about rights, representation, and social justice.
