Uganda-Qatar Forum Boosts Trade Links and Investment Opportunities
The Uganda-Qatar Business Forum held on March 15, 2024, in Doha emphasized a renewed commitment to enhancing economic, trade, and investment relations between Uganda and Qatar. The forum showcased Uganda’s emerging opportunities for Qatari investors while highlighting the country’s openness to Qatari capital in key growth sectors.
Hosted by KON Group in collaboration with the Embassy of Uganda in Qatar, the event featured notable participants, including Uganda’s Ambassador to Qatar, H E Dr. Stephen Chemoiko Chebrot, Chairman of KON Group, Mohamed Massani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Uganda, Bagiire Vincent, and the designate Ambassador of Qatar to Uganda, H E Ahmed Mohammed Abdulrahman Abdullah Al Zwaidi. Various senior officials and business delegates also attended.
Strengthening Partnerships for Economic Growth
In an interview with The Peninsula, Ambassador Chebrot called for stronger people-to-people and business-to-business partnerships. He noted that this forum marks a significant shift from previous discussions aimed at introducing Qatar to Uganda to a focus on showcasing Uganda’s products and investment opportunities. “This is the second business forum we are holding,” he explained. “We are moving from the previous one, which was more about establishing a business network, to now showcasing what investment opportunities are available in Uganda.”
Representatives from both countries highlighted lucrative trade and investment prospects. They underscored the importance of collaboration in building a “modern, resilient, and inclusive economy” driven by innovation and human development. Ambassador Chebrot remarked, “As you have seen in the presentations, Qatar and Uganda are getting to know each other better. I would like us to move this now from government-to-government engagement to also people-to-people relationships to improve trade.”
During his welcome remarks, Ambassador Chebrot characterized Uganda as a “promising frontier for investment,” driven by a youthful, dynamic population and a favorable investment climate. He emphasized the complementarity of Uganda’s rich natural resources with Qatar’s global leadership in capital investment and innovation. “Together, our foundation holds immense potential to create lasting value and global happiness,” he stated.
Focus on Sustainable Development and Innovation
Ambassador Chebrot outlined four critical pillars for collaboration: energy, mining, technology, and innovation, all vital for the shared economic future of both nations. He noted, “We are opening doors for joint ventures in global ecologies, adventure tourism, and training. We have the seeds to strengthen research, incubation, and digital transformation for our young innovators.”
Mohamed Massani, in his address, emphasized the growing collaboration between Qatari and Ugandan businesses, spotlighting both the commercial potential and cultural connections. “We celebrate not only trade and commitment but also friendship and strategy,” Massani noted. “Through our partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Uganda, we are connecting entrepreneurs, investors, and communities through innovation and sustainability.”
He highlighted a $10 million pre-investment project in animal waste recycling as a prime example of sustainable innovation that fosters mutual growth. Massani reiterated Uganda’s commitment to green investment and circular economy principles, saying, “That visit reminded us of open and vast provinces, a nation of opportunity and vision.”
As both nations continue to explore avenues for collaboration, the Uganda-Qatar Business Forum serves as a crucial platform for fostering trade ties and attracting investment, paving the way for a brighter economic future.
