James Holder Claims Gun Went Off During Fight with Bridgwater
A man facing murder charges has testified that a gun accidentally discharged during a confrontation with the alleged victim. James Arthur Holder took the stand at the High Court in Christchurch, asserting that he did not intentionally shoot David Bridgwater on January 4, 2024. Instead, he described a struggle that led to the firearm going off.
During the proceedings, Crown prosecutor Kerry White challenged Holder’s account, suggesting that he fired the weapon in a fit of rage. White argued that Holder had not only intended to harm Bridgwater but had actively chosen to leave him in a life-threatening situation afterward. The prosecutor’s repeated inquiries aimed to establish the motivation behind the shooting, emphasizing that the alleged act was deliberate.
Holder’s defense centers on the claim of an accidental discharge, contending that the chaotic nature of the fight led to the gun firing unintentionally. He maintained that he did not aim the weapon at Bridgwater nor did he possess the intent to kill or seriously injure him.
The trial continues to unfold, with both sides preparing to present their evidence. The court will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, focusing on the events leading up to the shooting and the moments immediately following it. Testimonies from witnesses and forensic evidence are expected to play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the case.
As the trial progresses, the implications of Holder’s claims will be closely scrutinized. The jury will need to consider whether the evidence supports the assertion of an accidental discharge or if it aligns with the prosecution’s narrative of intent. The legal proceedings are set to shed light on the complexities of this case and its broader impact on the community.
