Former TVNZ Presenter Sonya Wilson Thrives as Author and Philanthropist
Former New Zealand television reporter Sonya Wilson has transitioned from broadcast journalism to a successful career as a writer and charity founder. After more than two decades with TVNZ, where she reported and presented for programs including One News, Breakfast, 20/20, and Sunday, Wilson expanded her creative horizons by earning a Master of Creative Writing from the University of Auckland.
Her debut novel, Spark Hunter, is an adventure-fantasy story aimed at readers aged ten and older. Set against the stunning backdrop of Fiordland National Park, the book quickly gained popularity and became a bestseller. In 2022, it received the NZSA Best First Book Award at the NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults, along with a Storylines Notable Book Award.
Following the success of her first book, Wilson released its sequel, The Secret Green, in July 2025 through Allen & Unwin. She continues to write creative non-fiction, essays, and reviews, showcasing her passion for storytelling. Beyond her writing, Wilson actively participates in the literary community, giving talks, leading workshops, and chairing sessions at various writers’ festivals. Through these engagements, she combines her love for journalism and literature, inspiring audiences with her unique perspective.
Wilson is also dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children. She founded Kiwi Christmas Books, a charity that donates brand new books to children who may not have access to them otherwise. Her commitment to fostering a love of reading in young people reflects her belief in the transformative power of literature to build empathy and wonder.
Originally hailing from the Deep South of New Zealand, Wilson now resides in Auckland with her husband, Pete, their two sons, and a household that includes a cat named Graham and a dog named Dusky. Through her work as an author and philanthropist, Wilson continues to leave a lasting impact on both the literary world and the community.
