McKenzie Shines as New Zealand Edges Scotland in Thrilling Match
New Zealand secured a narrow victory over Scotland on October 28, 2023, at Murrayfield, overcoming a spirited comeback from the home side. The All Blacks initially dominated the match, leading 17-0 at halftime, but the Scots rallied impressively in the second half, leveling the score before a late surge from New Zealand sealed the win.
The match began with New Zealand establishing control early on. A try from halfback Cam Roigard set the tone as he capitalized on a brilliant 40-meter run and offload from lock Josh Lord. Following Roigard’s effort, winger Will Jordan added another try just before halftime, with both conversions executed by first-five Beauden Barrett, who also slotted a penalty during the first period.
As the teams returned for the second half, Scotland found their momentum. Hooker Ewan Ashman and winger Kyle Steyn each scored tries, with both conversions made by first-five Finn Russell. Russell’s penalty in the 60th minute brought the score to 17-17, raising hopes among the home crowd.
New Zealand’s discipline faltered during this period, with yellow cards issued to winger Leroy Carer, captain Ardie Savea, and flanker Wallace Sititi. This lack of discipline allowed Scotland to gain the upper hand, but the All Blacks responded with determination.
The game turned decisively when Damian McKenzie entered the match early in the second half to replace the injured Caleb Clarke. McKenzie made a significant impact late in the match, breaking the deadlock with a remarkable try in the corner, showcasing his agility and skill. With time winding down, he secured the victory by converting a challenging penalty from 45 meters, ensuring New Zealand retained their historic unbeaten record against Scotland, which now stretches to 33 matches over the past 120 years.
This victory marks New Zealand’s second win in their Grand Slam tour, having previously defeated Ireland in Chicago. The All Blacks now prepare for upcoming matches against England at Twickenham and Wales in Cardiff, aiming to achieve their tour goals with continued strength and focus.
As the final whistle blew, it was clear that while Scotland fought valiantly, New Zealand’s experience and depth ultimately prevailed, adding another chapter to their storied rugby history.
