Families in east Auckland can look forward to an exciting theatrical experience as the Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre (HCYT) presents its production of the classic tale, Peter Pan. Opening on September 13, 2023, this rendition of the beloved story by J.M. Barrie promises adventure and delight for audiences of all ages.

The narrative follows the adventures of Peter Pan, a boy who can fly and chooses to remain in Neverland, a magical place where he takes Wendy Darling and her younger brothers, John and Michael. Together, they encounter mermaids, fairies, and the notorious Captain Hook and his crew of pirates. Throughout their journey, they experience themes of courage, friendship, and the bittersweet nature of growing up.

The cast comprises dedicated young performers aged between nine and 14, all of whom have honed their skills over several years with HCYT. Under the direction of Fiona Bailey, they have been rehearsing twice a week for the past eight weeks, preparing to bring this enchanting story to life.

Dynamic Performances and Special Features

Bailey expressed her enthusiasm for the production, stating, “Peter Pan is such a fun and lively show; I’m sure it will appeal to all ages.” The performance will feature thrilling sword fights, engaging songs and dances, and even a special moment where audiences will witness Peter taking flight.

In a unique approach to casting, HCYT has decided to feature two actors in the roles of Peter Pan and Wendy. This allows for a greater number of students to participate, as audiences will see different actors portraying these pivotal characters in each half of the show.

The play will be staged at the Harlequin Theatre, located at 563 Pakuranga Road, Howick. With a runtime of approximately two hours, it is suitable for children aged five and older. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 PM on Friday, September 13, and 1:30 PM and 4:00 PM on Saturday, September 14, concluding with a 1:30 PM performance on Sunday, September 15. Tickets are priced at $10 per person, and bookings can be made via email at [email protected] or by calling 09 537 4943.

Engaging Young Audiences with Short Stories

In addition to Peter Pan, HCYT will also present a charming one-hour show titled Short Stories for Children. This production will feature beloved tales such as The Gruffalo, The Rainbow Fish, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Cinderella, and The Little Red Hen.

Performing in this show are young drama students, aged seven to 13, many of whom will be making their debut with HCYT. They have been rehearsing weekly for the past two terms, preparing to captivate younger audiences. To enhance the experience, there will be interactive moments allowing the children to stretch and sing along between stories.

The Short Stories for Children performances will also take place at the Harlequin Theatre, with shows scheduled for 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM on Saturday, September 13, and 11:00 AM on Sunday, September 14. Tickets are available for $8 each, with bookings following the same process as for Peter Pan.

Through these productions, HCYT aims to foster a love for theatre in young audiences while showcasing the talents of its dedicated students.
