Empowering Women: Essential Insights on Menopause

Menopause, a natural phase in a woman’s life, is increasingly gaining attention as more women seek to understand its impact on their health and well-being. Dr Eileen Sables, a general practitioner at Tend Pakuranga, emphasizes the importance of not suffering in silence if menopause symptoms are affecting one’s quality of life. During Tend Women’s Health Week last month, discussions around menopause highlighted its significance and the need for greater awareness.
Understanding Menopause and Its Symptoms
Menopause typically occurs around the age of 51 when a woman’s menstrual periods cease. However, many women may not realize that symptoms can begin well before this stage, during a transitional period known as perimenopause. This phase often starts in a woman’s 40s and can bring a variety of symptoms.
The most commonly reported symptoms include hot flashes and night sweats, but women may also experience headaches, joint pain, irritability, and emotional changes such as tearfulness. Dr Sables notes that one of the most frequent questions she receives is about the duration of these symptoms. She explains, “On average, you’re looking at about two to four years, but I’ve spoken to women who’ve had symptoms for much longer.”
Seeking Help and Available Treatments
Understanding the effects of menopause is crucial, especially as modern women are likely to live more than half their lives post-transition. Dr Sables urges women who are struggling with symptoms to consult their doctors. “The good news is symptoms can be alleviated by replacing hormones you lose during this transition,” she says.
During menopause, the body produces less oestrogen and progesterone, hormones critical for various bodily functions. Hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) can significantly improve symptoms for many women. There are numerous effective treatment options available, and seeking professional advice can help women navigate this phase of life more comfortably.
In conclusion, as awareness around menopause grows, it is essential for women to be informed about the changes their bodies undergo. Dr Sables encourages open discussions about menopause, urging women not to hesitate in seeking help and understanding their options. By doing so, they can improve their quality of life during this significant transition.
