Jacqueline Keenan Rides 24 Hours to Raise Funds for MND

Jacqueline Keenan is set to undertake a remarkable challenge on October 4, 2023, as she plans to ride an echo bike for a continuous 24 hours at her local gym. This fundraising effort aims to support Motor Neuron Disease New Zealand (MND New Zealand) following her father’s recent diagnosis with motor neuron disease (MND).
Keenan, whose father Craig Keenan was diagnosed at the age of 64, expressed her determination to use this personal experience to raise awareness and funds for those affected by the disease. “It’s been hard on all of us,” she stated, reflecting on the challenges faced by her family. With limited knowledge of MND prior to her father’s diagnosis, Keenan is now motivated to create positive changes in the lives of others impacted by this debilitating condition.
The fundraising initiative has garnered significant support, with nine teams and a total of 36 participants already signed up to join her in this effort. “I’ve got nine teams signed up so far, so that’s 36 people signed up to do it, giving up their whole weekend,” she shared. The only breaks she plans to take during the event will be for essential needs, with all eating and other activities managed while on the bike.
Challenging the Limits
Keenan chose the echo bike for its intensity and unique challenge. “You either love it or hate it – and I love it,” she remarked, demonstrating her enthusiasm for the equipment. As the event approaches, she acknowledged the uncertainty of how she will feel after such an extensive workout. “We’ll see if I still love it at the end,” she noted.
Craig Keenan expressed immense pride in his daughter’s initiative. “She’s done it all on her own … the only pressure now is she has to bike for 24 hours,” he said. His own diagnosis came as a surprise in January, as he was initially unaware of MND and the complexities involved in obtaining a diagnosis. “There’s no real tests for motor neuron disease. There’s a number of other things they have to eliminate first,” he explained.
Jacqueline described her father as a fit and active individual with a passion for vintage cars, referring to him as a “motorhead.” Despite the challenges MND presents, she remains hopeful about the impact of her fundraising efforts.
Raising Awareness and Support
MND New Zealand plays a crucial role in providing support for individuals living with the disease and funding research efforts. According to the organization, approximately 400 people in New Zealand are currently diagnosed with MND, highlighting the need for increased awareness and resources.
Jasmine Chua, a regional support advisor for MND New Zealand, emphasized the importance of community initiatives like Keenan’s. “Fundraisers are important for our financial support and to raise awareness,” she stated. She described MND as a “debilitating illness” that affects not only the individual but also their families and caregivers.
Chua highlighted a common concern for those living with MND, stating, “The worry of her getting tired and having to pace herself is very much the day-to-day concern of people with motor neuron disease.” This insight underscores the ongoing challenges faced by individuals coping with the condition.
Through her 24-hour echo bike challenge, Jacqueline Keenan aims not only to raise funds but to foster a greater understanding of motor neuron disease and its impact on families. As the date approaches, her commitment to this cause continues to inspire those around her, shining a light on the realities of living with MND.
