Luxon and Trump Share Stage at Dinner with Unforgettable Moments
A dinner hosted by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung brought together influential figures including Christopher Luxon, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, and former U.S. President Donald Trump. The event, which featured a menu that included dumplings made with truffles and a local delicacy known as ogol chicken, provided a platform for lighthearted banter and pointed remarks among the attendees.
As the dinner commenced, President Lee welcomed guests, urging everyone to take their seats. Luxon, attempting to promote New Zealand’s culinary appeal, humorously suggested that attendees would want to “ogle” the country’s chickens. This unexpected comment drew laughter, but also prompted a quick clarification from Luxon, distancing his remark from any inappropriate implications regarding women.
Trump quickly engaged with the conversation, inquiring about Luxon’s identity and playfully questioning whether he was associated with Unilever. Luxon confirmed his past role with the company, which Trump labeled as “incredible,” emphasizing the importance of innovation in today’s global business landscape.
The discussion soon shifted to the economic achievements of the United States. Trump declared, “We have the strongest economy, the strongest borders,” attributing these successes to his administration’s recent policies. He boasted about substantial investments in the U.S., claiming that discussions of over $18 trillion in new investments had surfaced just that morning. In a characteristic display of bravado, he compared the current state of the U.S. economy to that of the previous administration, which he dismissed with a humorous jab about only raising “thirty-seven dollars and fifty cents” in four years.
As the dinner progressed, Trump expressed concern over the appearance of the ogol chicken, noting its unusual black color. President Lee reassured him that the dish is well-known for its distinctive look and flavor. Trump’s commentary on the chicken led to a humorous exchange, with him observing, “I’ve never seen a black chicken before. What’s going on?”
Luxon also reflected on his own experiences with job creation and economic restructuring, noting the significant number of jobs he had eliminated in his own tenure. “I’ve made tens of thousands of people unemployed and it’s really turned things around,” he stated, to which Trump responded with approval, recognizing Luxon’s quick understanding of the business landscape.
In a moment of levity, Trump raised a toast to Luxon, humorously remarking on the “many levers” Luxon pulls as CEO of Unilever, further teasing that the stress of his role might be affecting his hair. The evening concluded with Trump thanking his hosts and emphasizing the quality of the food, albeit with a caveat regarding the black chicken.
As the dinner wrapped up, Luxon attempted to pivot the discussion towards more serious topics, such as tariffs, but Trump swiftly dismissed the subject, signaling the end of the evening’s lighter tone.
This gathering highlighted the intertwining of diplomacy and business, showcasing the unique dynamics of international relations and the personal interactions that often shape them. The lighthearted exchanges at this dinner reflect a blend of camaraderie and competitiveness among global leaders, a testament to the intricate dance of politics and commerce on the world stage.
